Nov 18 : UNIQULTURE

(6) Uniqulture

Planet Earth - stuff your divisions. Welcome to the 21st century.

R/Evolution started at the weekend.

MadCap cabaret of Deptford and Music Tourist Board put their heads together in Deptford some peace initiatives to represent South London and teenagers in a different, more positive light, to make a change.
See images of the Artful RAR! at http://www.myspace.com/rar_events for something not in the news.

The Unplugged Sessions of Albany Cafe united with the Open Mic of Deptford Arms to make Saturdays a day out. The old Oxford pub (Birds Nest) united with the old Cambridge pub (Deptford Arms) last year when the New Cross Inn united with the local venues/promoters/studios to create the "24 Hour Concrete Glastonbury of Rocklands Party".

Dead Planet Records/Management, Upsetta, Earwax Radio/TV and the bands that played at Rocklands Club on Saturday at New Cross Inn are all up for the future. Lots of the Artful Pirate Award tips for 009, too.

Panda Power Parties and Music Tourist Board are united through Rocklands Management who have been in touch with Club Blub who saw Messengers at Camden Proud Gallery's Playground Club who had been recommended the band by Music Tourist Board. Club Blub immediately booked them, also tuned into Earwax TV, feel a link coming on.

Felix's School Of Rock and RAR! 14+ club are looking at collaborating for the new year. Club Blub is friends with the Rhodes Rocks All Ages show and work with a band member managed by Dead Planet (who staged the first Chew Lips gig in New Cross) at their venue in Herts.

Dirty Sounds and Sharing Sheaths have united the seeds of Planet Water through Artful which celebrated that some of the Artful Pirate bands (Kids Love Lies, Chew Lips etc) were filmed in Summer by teen film makers Loose Belt.

We have allies in Denmark, Australia, Japan, Italy, USA (including the Debbie Harry/Kaiser Chiefs etc endorsed Rock'n'Renew project). This is only a fraction of the connections. MTB's playing class friends include every kind of service (except publishing) necessary for music.

So since starting again from scratch on All Fool's Day 008, the end of the year will have been a fruitful first nine months for Music Tourist Board as a social enterprise.

We give birth to Uniqulture, publicly, in the new year. Where else to start but at the time zone of the planet? For now though, onwards. Hope that you share the joy.

Nov Lucky 13 : London's Pirate Cove declares peace.

Following connections made at Artful (watch this space) between the various collectives and events of South East London 009 will share the unity vibe that has changed this old sailor's town and the borough of Lewisham (Brockley, New Cross etc) and surround areas into the heart of art. As ever, all involvement invited.

Diversity
Eccentricity
Positivity
Teenage Hope
Friends & Family
Open Minds
Revolution
Destiny

The unity of community has helped to create
The model for a future that is London S. E. 8.

The Artful RAR! is now up at Ruben Music N Videos and see the positivity of teen street style shining at the RAR! Club MySpace page pictures.

Hats off to Kids Love Lies. As now recommended in The Times. Damn right! It's been a year and a half for the punky gang who have set up home in Proud Gallery courtesy of Artful promoter Warren Morris, graced this year's People's Day Festival, joined the Midsummer Dream all-dayer at New Cross Inn and played the pilot Earwax TV show in October. Get in therre before they take over 2009 myspace.com/kidslovelies

The Planet Water vibe is in full effect. Go to the RAR! MySpace page and see the street style and positivity united by the 14+ crowd at Deptford Albany. The polar opposite of Planet Earth bemoaning teenagers as rotten and Sarf London as worse... This is the time zone of the world with a history of both slavery and abolition. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery and get your arse to Costa del Thames.

The launch of One Foot Cow was no fluke. The Upsetta collective had New Cross Inn rocking again on bonfire night with their special guests Toy Toy and Charlie XCX especially making an impression. This is definitely a club to scout at.

November : Monthly Planet (Music.Tourist.Board publication) includes Artful, Chew Lips, Earwax TV, Trash Fashion, Officer Kicks, Bleech, RAR!, Beardyman and more.Read or download
Monthly Planet (Nov 008)

November : Following the success of it’s Artful Broadcast pilot, the second episode of Earwax TV went out live from Sound Loop Studios in Welling on 3 November. Thank you anybody that came on line to be part of the show. An hour later, the show was available on line. Then the Earwax Radio show, (with it's international music fans of UK newer wave) will feature tracks from this session. Oh and, how BRILLIANT are this episode’s live band?!!!! BLEECH Very exciting to get them early doors. With this show, it doesn’t get more grassroots and intimate. It’s a learning curve. This time no still screen for 10 minutes (!), but there were hitches. The first interview came out a bit quiet. The kit went a bit bonkers. The camera got drunk. The bass amp had a hissy fit. The lights turned out to be better turned ON after two songs and Matt the drummer sort of told a joke to groan to, but there is NO denying that 2009 has this young East End rock trio written all over it in large letters. Love their music, love their attitude, the future is bright. go to www.myspace.com/slumminangels to hear.Earwax played tunes and announced gig news and contacts with mentions and plays for The Situationists, Thee Vicars Sattelite State, Messengers, The Heartbreakers, New Cross Inn, Tim Ten Yen, CMU, Upsetta, Matt Finucane...Maintaining high quality, freshness and infectiousness is important to the development of what Andy & Jamie at Earwax & computer genius, Doug, at Sound Loop are looking to achieve. Potential is growing. Following last night’s show, another cool band are about to confirm for Episode 3 on Monday 17th November and another are negotiating a date for a special in the new year. An offer of help from a PR, and interest from linking up from an independent magazine. Result. Artful style.
wax-music.com * earwax myspace * Earwax TV first two episodes

That has got to be the most creating and connecting ARTFUL to date. Clubs, releases, record labels and a venue launched, art, photography and projections exhibited, media expanded, an installation or two, collectives united and a return to In The City (where Artful launched in 2005). There were press reviews, articles and previews, books released, new talentss recommended and the first on line TV venture between Earwax Radio and Sound Loop Studios. Films made/screened, photography sessions, label parties. Talks, Walks, Workshops. New music industry connections made with participation artists. In true Artful fashion, it'll make a difference to the future. Talking of which, some new year tips (Pirate Awards) will be invited to take part in the new clubs, media and the ukireland guide of alternative, artful and affordable for 009. Massive thank you to the friends that have got involved so far, becoming the Music Tourist Board allies that form the inspiration of the guide. DIY and grassroots as it comes, Artful is set up to be non dependent on media/partners, sponsorship, and press, yet still attracts the attention of independent minds without celebrity or big bucks. Following the sucess of Artful No.4 some of that last sentence has changed for next year. But not the Planet Water vibe. If you are already on board then you are invited to be part of Artful 009 (No.5) in advance. If not, you are invited to Share The Joy.

THE ARTFUL HALLOWEEN BREAK BEAT PARTY on Halloween Night rounded off the month in fullest style. Hosted by Lenny Love & Roni Lake it packed the Shoreditch Bedroom Bar with a fancy dress house party of debauchery until the door staff were turning folks away. Hats off to the Dirty Sounds gang, the DJs, Artful Dodgers galore and some frankly mad enough to be authentically scary friendly nutters on the dance floor/beds/art wall etc. Artful curator, Lenny Love, is probably still recovering. Actually the after-show party in South East London is probably still going on at time of typing (Sunday afternoon!)

Have yet to catch up with South London Folkelore Society for the juice on The Dark Arts Walk on 30th October, and Code Red Promotions on the launch of Troy Club in Shoreditch that same night. Halloween was parties a plenty! More news to come back from Artful as and when...

25 OCT 008 - UNPLUGGED SESSION at The Albany Cafe

A wealth of talent calls in to the new artists Saturday afternoon hang out. Launched earlier this month, The Unplugged Sessions are proving their potential. Artful called in at the weekend to check out the show. The clear sweet voice of Jess Murray got things off to a great start (oh oh, i FELT that song about alcohol!) http://www.myspace.com/jessmurraymusic Next up, live airings from the acclaimed album Start & Begin saw Ceri James also received to great applause http://www.myspace.com/cerijames then, The Bard of Rocklands, Lewie mixed folk tale and guitar-wonder to stunning effect http://www.myspace.com/lewiemusic and rounding up this special afternoon were Shay & Jo of The Veez, a new facet to the achievements of the already accomplished rock outfit. It says a lot about the high standard of this entire bill (and South East London in general) that they have been snapped up to appear on the TV station, Dave, a few days later http://www.myspace.com/theveez
To get a slot on the bill (which runs from mid-day to as soon after 3pm as possible) contact host, Cameron, via http://www.myspace.com/thealbanydeptford although for open mic, turn up at the start of the show. With a well lit, raised stage and PA/tech, as well as the odd local promoter etc hanging out to scout for their bills, it's a nice place to hang out on a Saturday afternoon and see a free show, make new friends, as well as somewhere to get seen and heard... Time Zone's Got Talent! - 12-3pm Saturdays, Albany Cafe, Douglas Way, Deptford, London SE8 4AG, free entry, licensed cafe.

22 OCT 008
EARWAX RADIO ARTFUL BROADCAST
with KIDS LOVE LIES live in session

Success for The Pilot Earwax TV show

As part of this year's Artful, Earwax Radio + Sound Loop Studios + rising punky popsters, Kids Love Lies, joined forces for the The Artful Broadcast, which was the pilot of a new venture in broadcasting for the Time Zone's newer wave station.

The show - made in Welling (a few stops past Blackheath) - began with a webcam on the studio, Earwax Radio presenters Andy and Jamie in the DJ box and Sound Loop Studio's Doug in the control room.

At 9pm exactly, (international) music fans logged in to SLS via http://www.mylivesession.com/ and became part of the show. The few technical hitches of the recording (which won't feature on the actual podcast/download) were forgotten as Kids Love Lies exploded onto the screen with their lively and engaging set, while their fans moshed along in their rooms, making requests for songs or waves to the screen, (and some chat up lines!).

The bottom line is that it was not only a lot of fun, but proved itself a highly attractive exposure, like having your own TV show. It needs tweaking a little, but there's no doubting that it worked. The control room sound for the session was great. In between, Earwax Radio played new music from The Coolness, Maths Class, Officer Kicks, The Brute Chorus, We Used To Make Things and more. All in all a very Artful Broadcast.

The show was an unmitigated success, and will now happen on a regular basis. It requires camera-charismatic talent with real abilities. There is no doubting that Ellen from Kids Love Lies has got a belter of a voice on her, or that the rest of the band compliment it with tight powerpop. There was some interview footage, much candid enjoyment and excellent feedback for mooooooore!
http://www.myspace.com/kidslovelies

The live web chat has actually helped to shape the regular event that this will become Everybody on stage, in the booth, in the control room and on the webchat united and started something as part of what has been the most creative Artful year so far!

Keep an eye and ear out for KIDS LOVE LIES in session and the Earwax Radio Artful Broadcast in the near future. at http://www.wax-music.com
and
http://www.myspace.com/earwaxradio

Music Tourist Board allies will be scouting recommended stars for future shows. In the mean time, check out Kids Love Lies and fellow MTB/Earwax faves, Chew Lips live on stage at London's Old Blue Last on November 6th.

WEEK 3

The Deptford 45s by Anita McKeown gotta be some of the favourite short films ever. A lovely crowd at Albany Cafe, loved the live soundtrack performances to accompany movies. Thee's been a lovely entwining between Artful and Deptford X since the X Party of 006 which is still part of the Deptford Lives films by Nicola Pritchard that seem to be on Digital TV channels every couple of months, even recently. The peace and love of Panda Power Parties hit Punk in Soho this week, catch up with the Jean Genie for the news of this Amnesty International fund raiser and will add it here. Local heroes galore on Deptford High Street on Friday night for a Bench Outreach charity fund raiser with Joel Pott of Athlete, The Spotlight Kid and more. The coolest and the hottest are calling in to Costa del Thames. This ARTFUL's expo of talent, ideas, industries and places is already proving the art powered socialist music business that help to make the borough of Lewishambles a virtual republic from the 51st state.

WEEK 2

Ended last night on a full moon with the local motto YOU CAN'T KILL THE SPIRIT hanging in the air after the gathering at Deptford Arms for the talk Deptford Fun City (the history and music of New Cross & Deptford) by Neil Gordon Orr. Tales of how Damon Albarn stopped time on the New Cross Road, how Fats Waller, Kurt Cobain and other legends were in the area and so much more. New connections made during this Artful, too. As a game of two halves, Artful is on it with the results. Looks like there's a media partner for the new year, the basic bones of the guide now done, a fashion shoot offer for a photographer up at the Rock And Rave! Exhibition, the fab Toy Toy are gonna play the Nov 5th One Foot Cow, a film-making offer to work with an Artful author, extra media interest in some of the artful bands that have played, reports/interviews/images galore gathered, the Dead Planet Records night was a triumph - saw Rubicks, The Brute Chorus and Tape The Radio bring joy to the dance floor (missed a bit as there was a total party happening at New Cross Inn the same night too), found an intriguing new music photographer, Joshua Ainsworth. Yeah NX Road was rocking. The Marlborough in the press and winning fans as a new venue (tho the Artful BBQ ended up, comedy style, as cheating pizza, fairy cakes and various bits and bobs plonked on paper plates with no cutlery - ahem!) at least Gaolers Daughter and The Hancocks made it a top night, hats off to Lee Artrocker, Lenny Love and the femme fatale herself Jane Heartbreaker. Caught up with Artful faves, The Pepys who were off to play with The Metros the next day and bumped into the Upsetta posse. What a place. Bacardiac Arrest, The Moon, Indigo Moss and more have been some of the highlights of the fortnight old arty-party central(!) and along with The Duke of Malrborough, local resident Del Trotter (The Duk!) is immortalised on the pub sign by JonJon Bacardi. Student course work by Aplomb Signpainters responsible for the venue sign artwork. Watch this space as more reports come back.

LOADS more on board for the second half of this month; who is coming for face to face social networking at our HQ, New Cross Inn, on Saturday night. Short film screenings begin at 8pm. To get in free after 9pm you'll have to make your own Artful badge otherwise please bring the small offering of just £3 for a fantastic show. see www.artfulfestival.co.uk/2-0_whatson/ for the juice on The Artful Broadcast by Earwax Radio starring Artful's music makers and with Kids Love Lies live in Session plus Artful Dodger playing live at RAR! (The Albany Deptford) plus Maths Class, Man Like Me, Aquasky, The Vivians, The Real Heat, Officer Kicks, Queens English, Toy Toy, Dean Tynan, Simian Sounds, My Panda Shall Fly, Pimp Soul, Milk Plus, Rocksteady, Dexy, We Used To Make Things, Lewie Dyer, Tommy Mizen, Joel Pott (Athlete), Boom Bap Showtime, Eska, Chris Getliffe, Dave Okumu, Zachary Stephenson, Jinadu, The Spotlight Kid, Will Stopha joining the music making plus film screenings; Deptford 45s, Digital Sneakers, Roman Rappak, Loose Belt, Reuben & Josh, Ampersand TV and a very special showing at Greenwich Picturehouse of of the Bafta nominated Tea Time (about the landmark Blackheath tea hut). There's a Rock School course (culminating in a real gig), The Dark Arts Walk with South East London folklore society and of course, the Artful Halloween Break Beats & Fancy Dress Party. As ever, photographers, fairies, writers and networkers, get in there and make future!

WEEK 1

Spoon Of Music event (1st October) created new friendships between the VJs of Micron 63 and The Blue Light District, plus photography/journalism and Music Tourist Board. The same night, One Foot Cow at New Cross Inn launched a new DJs/Bands/VJs club. The Coolness, who played live, also launch a new release this month. Anita McKeown sadly couldn't open her exhibition and have her birthday party at the Artful Dodger's party. A surreal candle lit gathering for We Make Things Records - with cakes n pies n rock n roll (courtesy of Dirty Sounds & The Heartbreakers DJ sets) - visualised beautifully with projections from The Blue Light District in Deptford Arms with a 20 foot high display on Deptford High Street! A new contact was made with regards to possible Southampton gig-swaps too. Just what the Artful guide needs! Within three days, Artful was off to a promising start. The first weekend included a trip to this year's In The City (UK Music Industry's annual convention 5-7 Oct) where Artful Awards nominees The Brute Chorus (in New Cross 9 Oct), Maths Class (in New Cross 18 Oct), Innercity Pirates, The Vivians (at RAR 24 Oct), Officer Kicks (Water Rats 30 Oct) and more were on this year's bill. Bumped into the lovely Huw Stephens who has bagged another of the tips, Chew Lips, for his fest in November. Also bumped into rising star new music PRs 10xBetter and a plethora (aha! found an excuse to use that word) of industry & media contacts to exchange chat with. Talking of which, massive thanks to Pulse (S.London Pres) for the big Artful spread, to Gravity Guide for the preview article and to all that have been spreading the word. The first Artful Image Exhibition started going up at the weekend. Rock And Rave! features images by Mackenzie Hodge, Jenna Foxton, Ann-Marie Mullarkey and Satoko Owada so far and will grow on the walls of The Albany Cafe until it ends on the date of the next RAR! (24 October). The same venue also launched it's Unplugged Sessions (Saturday afternoon entertainment in a lovely setting). The breathtaking performance by Lewie Dyer has alreaady been requested to return on 25 October with some very cool folky sounds courtesy of Tommy Mizen also on the bill so far. The week ended with award winning comedy at The Marlborough (London SE5), Popular Workshop album launch with William in Shoreditch (EC2) and Thee Vicars and The Vivians live at Artrocker club in Highbury (N5) - the results of that, to follow...

ARTFUL HISTORY

1999 partied like it was... 2000 Planet Earth = Year 000 Planet Water. Compass faces South.

Oct 003 : Music Tourist Board friends presented four weeks of Pop Of The Tops club at Paradise Bar Tuesday nght shows filmed by Digital Sneakers, compiled by Angular Records (and released the next month), photographed by Maps Magazine, decorated by South East Xhibition (Fairies Band) and attended by an audience that have gone on to start THE labels, media, bands, art concepts, clubs etc of TODAY.

Oct 004 : The films ‘Rocklands - Live In New Cross’ created a new region of London, 15 minutes of New Cross Scene fame earned Digital Sneakers an Xfm special and kicked off the Rocklands Rounded Tour with a RIOT at The Metro then The Rakes headlining the first outta London show. Corporation:Blend and Nebraska on the road with photographer, Peter Hill. Pop Of The Tops was then killed off to Stay Beautiful.

Artful No. 1 (005) : launched at Camden Barfly and set a new mood. Threw the most DIY party at In The City convention (Manchester) to prove limitless ambition, then established the South East Bank. London’s most creative community. Ther’s more than the one side of S. London usually portrayed... this one is positive, friendly, creative, surreal and hopeful. The vibe: http://transpont.blogspot.com/
"out-of-the-ordinary festival on london's south east bank" (independent on sunday)

Artful No.2 (006) : United venues & community, beginning the situationist tale Once Upon Another Time and accompanying download “This compilation of new music gives some oxygen to British rock and pop” (Morning Star Newspaper). X Party (shown as part of the Deptford Lives short film by Nicola Pritchard on Digital TV to accompany the BBC Series The Tower) Xploded at Deptford X and created NXP when artists Tristan Scutt and Kate Wolfenden (New Cross Inn, Deptford Arms, Kate&Tristan) met Love Pirate Minxy McNaughty to form a trio of Naughty X People. NXP, in in turn created the now legendary Rocklands Party (thousands of music fans took to the venues and streets of New Cross and Deptforrd for 24 hours, 5 May 007, things have never been the same).

A night of debauchery in the capital’s new capital of underground arts, culture and getting on down” (time out magazine on the artful x party rock installation).

Artful No. 3 (007) created Costa del Thames the city’s affordable bohemian adventure. More gallery, experimental, squat parties, the legendary New Cross Inn & 13:53 night of debauchery and the glamtastick Rocklands Party at The Albany paving the way for the launch of RAR! Club in January.

"a whole host of performers that should go on to great things in the future"
(pulse, s.london press)

ARTFUL FUTURE
No. 4 (008) R/Evolution and Hope and catches up with the tale, the first Expo of Music Tourist Board talents. In a credit crunch, hire professionalism with enthusiasm, for the best results. Who knows what will happen after the invitations to create peace and joy?

About Artful :

This gathering is the ultimate in alternative festivity with a proven record of achievement and talent spotting. The chic and scruffy unite, shaping the future. The reputation is for high quality entertainment at low prices, inclusive experiments and creative documentation. Artful takes place after Freshers week at various venues across London with a high percentage taking place in the densely performing/creating community populating the lower east side bohemia of “Rocklands” (i.e. across the river from Docklands). The Olympic spirit’s been here for decades. Coupled with rebellion and a wide maverick streak, it keeps this part of town unique. The local motto is still YOU CAN’T KILL THE SPIRIT.

About Music Tourist Board :

ince 2003 musicians, music fans and their friends have promoted a positive alternative to the world on the news, and invented new ways of working, using friendship where finance didn't exist to develop the most exciting newer wave (i.e. art powered and networked) talents. Mainly through live music events. Many of MTB’s half-formed (but boldly innovative) ideas turn up elsewhere as polished, sponsored, professional versions later on, which is encouraging for this organic Ideas Factory. All Ages are involved. Humans aren’t divided Planet Earth style. Fun is more productive than violence/inequality etc and peace is always cheaper. Worth bearing in mind these days.

We create at our live clubs, plus host events like Rocklands Bandstand (outdoor festival stage), City Showcase 006, In The City and as part of NXP; Rocklands Party, Artful Festival, City Showcase 008 and RAR! Club. Music Tourist Board Venues include New Cross Inn, Deptford Arms, Albany Theatre, Kilburn Good Ship, Camden Barfly, ULU, Metro, Monto Water Rats... with performances spanning The Coolness, Hatcham Social, Officer Kicks, Dexy, The IRS, Popular Workshop, Pop Levi, Plugs, William, The Rank Deluxe, Mark Morriss, Twisted Charm, Cheeky Cheeky & The Nosebleeds, Seeing Scarlet, Blast, Art Brut, Chew Lips, Bloc Party, Toy Toy and with NXP launching the 14+ RAR! events this year including Pendulum, DJ Luck & MC Neat, Princess Superstar, Ratty Rat Rat, My Passion, Party Shank, The Pepys, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip etc... In short, Music Tourist Board involves LOADS of wonderful stars. Some of them well known, some of them completely not.

From not for profit disorganisation via Artful to the creation of a semi-professional social enterprise business on all fools day (1st april). Music Tourist Board is sponsored by real people in the community who pay between £0 and £5 to experience and if sufficiently moved, get involved with buzz bands up close. An organic cottage industry has created a wealth of results. Watch this (Outer) space...
